TerraFab
Light-routing optics & interference challenge.
The Physics Department at GEMS New Millennium School proudly presents TerraFab, a sub-event of AstroNexus’26. Designed for Grade 7–8 students, this challenge introduces participants to hands-on optical engineering, light paths, and spatial problem-solving using modular mirror and sensor arrays.
Students will explore light behavior by constructing precision optical paths, manipulating angles of incidence to bypass physical roadblocks, and aligning beams to hit target sensors accurately without signal loss.

Objective
- Learn the core principles of light propagation, rectilinear transmission, and the law of reflection.
- Use precision optical setups, lasers/emitters, and front-surface mirrors.
- Calculate and adjust mirror angles to direct light beams around designated obstacles.
- Measure and optimize beam accuracy and target alignment under strict time constraints.
- Analyse signal interference and path efficiency across complex grid layouts.
Format
- Setup & Design (45 min) Assemble and align mirrors, splitters, and grid blocks within the allocated time.
- Signal Test Energize the light system and execute the target beam routing through the maze.
- Judge Interview & Science Viva Present the optical configuration to judges and answer core conceptual questions.
Judging
- Data Analysis & Precision — beam accuracy, target hits, and signal stability.
- Scientific Understanding — demonstration of wave/light principles during the viva.
- Methodology & Documentation — strategic placement of optics, obstacle clearance, and path efficiency.
- Teamwork & Technical Proficiency — collaboration in pairs and adherence to the 45-minute build limit.
- Presentation of Findings — clarity and technical accuracy during the judge interview.
